In-house Brand and Digital Designer

My time at Redgate Software, 2022–2025.  Brand systems, Internal Design, UX, Campaigns, and Environmental design

I joined Redgate Software in September 2022 as a Digital Designer within the brand team, initially on a fixed-term contract. The role kept getting extended, and I stayed for just under three years, leaving in June 2025. During that time I worked across almost every area of the business that touched brand: systems, UX, platforms, campaigns, events, employer branding, and physical environments. I collaborated with PMMs, senior leadership, content teams, and developers, across UK, US, European, and Australian time zones. The role was always varied, and while it covered a broad range of disciplines, it shifted increasingly toward UX-focused work as time went on.

Redgate is a Cambridge-based SaaS company trusted by 92% of the Fortune 100. During my time there the business was actively growing; opening new offices overseas expanding its brand presence. That context meant there was a consistent and wide-ranging volume of design work coming through, from day-to-day brand output and employer branding through to significant platform projects and international event campaigns.

Brand Systems & Guardianship

When I joined, Redgate had a brand system in place but fragmented in some areas. Sub-brands sat separately, guidelines weren’t consistently followed, and the tools for the wider team to work within the brand were underperforming. A significant part of my time was spent addressing that.

I helped consolidate the sub-brands into a single cohesive brand guidelines document, and took on ongoing responsibility for Redgate’s Canva workspace, building and maintaining evergreen and campaign ad templates that allowed product and marketing teams to produce on-brand content without requiring heavy design input each time. Templates had to be flexible enough for non-designers to use confidently while keeping output consistent with brand guidelines. I also handled ad approvals as part of that process.

Brand custodianship extended to managing digital asset libraries across Canva and Brandfolder, keeping assets organised, current, and accessible. Day-to-day that meant reviewing work, fielding requests, and maintaining standards as the team and company expanded.

UX & Digital Platforms

Figma design system

Toward the end of my time at Redgate I worked on the Honeycomb UX Framework; a comprehensive Figma design system covering core elements, colours, variables, and components. The system was built to be thorough enough to support consistent output at scale, and was beginning to roll out across the team when I left. It fed into a full web pipeline from Figma into Storybook component libraries through to WordPress, crafted in close collaboration with the development team.

Landing pages and single-page work

Alongside the larger platform projects, I designed a steady stream of conversion-focused landing pages and product pages across the Redgate portfolio. That included competitor comparison pages, such as a direct positioning page for Redgate Flyway, as well as product entry pages, event landing pages, and campaign-specific pages. This work was commercially driven, aimed at capturing search traffic and converting visitors at specific points in the funnel.

Simple Talk

The most substantial single project of my time at Redgate was the overhaul of Simple Talk, Redgate’s long-running technical publishing platform serving thousands of daily readers. Viewership had been declining year on year, and I led the UX, design, brand work end to end over roughly ten months to addres this, accounting for around 70% of my workload during that period. The brief was to reverse the decline, modernise the platform, and turn an engaged readership into a source of leads for the wider business. The challenge was doing that without compromising the editorial independence that made Simple Talk worth reading in the first place.

Employer Branding & Internal Design

As Redgate grew and expanded into new offices overseas, employer branding became a steady and significant part of my workload. That covered recruitment advertising, including some more characterful campaigns around charity events and themed occasions, as well as onboarding materials, swag, lanyards, and internal presentation templates for teams across the business.

I designed the company’s Gender Pay Gap report for three consecutive years, building a template in the first year that made subsequent editions considerably more efficient to produce. Internal communications design, culture materials, and decks for cross-functional teams were a regular part of the role throughout.

Cavendish House

The most substantial piece of internal brand work was the fit-out of Cavendish House, Redgate’s new Cambridge headquarters. Working alongside a professional interiors firm, I was responsible for everything branded in the space, from exterior building signage down to the smallest interior detail, ensuring the building felt unmistakably Redgate from the moment you walked in. The designs were also built to be flexible enough to roll out across other Redgate locations worldwide.

Campaigns and events

Event design was a consistent thread across my time at Redgate. Across the Redgate Summit series, SQLBits, DevOps in a Day roadshows, and multiple PASS Data Community Summit appearances, I produced a high volume of booth and banner designs alongside event materials including one-pagers, merch, and supporting assets. Events ranged from intimate roadshows through to large-scale international conferences, and the design work had to flex accordingly, from quick-turnaround print assets to fully conceived booth environments. In 2024 I contributed to the branding for PASS Data Community Summit in Seattle, hosted by Redgate, and one of the most significant events in the database community calendar.

The most creatively distinct project was Flyway With Us, a campaign name I coined for a Redgate Flyway international event tour. The campaign leaned into the travel theme throughout, and I led the full design output: concept, slogan, custom iconography, landing page, a plane-shaped event booth, promotional video, and swag. It was a chance to push the Redgate brand into more playful territory than day-to-day work allowed, and the result was a cohesive campaign that held together across every touchpoint. One of the more enjoyable briefs of my time there.
